The 5 Biggest IT Security Risks for SMEs

· Ramin Amini

Cyberattacks are not a question of if, but when. Small and mid-sized enterprises are particularly attractive targets: too big to be irrelevant — and too small to invest in large-scale security infrastructure.

1. Phishing and social engineering

More than 80% of all cyberattacks start with a phishing email. Employees are the first line of defence — and often the weakest. Regular awareness training and technical measures such as email filtering and multi-factor authentication are not a luxury but basic protection.

2. Outdated software and missing updates

Known vulnerabilities in unpatched systems are the preferred entry point for attackers. A consistent patch management process and regular vulnerability scans are the simplest measure with the greatest impact.

3. Insufficient access controls

Too many employees have access to too many systems. The principle of least privilege is ignored in many organisations — often out of convenience. In an incident, this allows attackers to move laterally through the network.

4. No incident response plan

What happens when a system is compromised? Many organisations do not know. Without a defined emergency plan, valuable hours are lost when it matters most — and the response often causes more damage than the attack itself.

5. Data protection and GDPR compliance as an afterthought

IT security and data protection are two sides of the same coin. Missing data protection impact assessments, unsecured data transfers or absent deletion policies are not just compliance risks — they are security gaps.
